What are Soft Skills and why are they important?

Wikipedia defines people skills or “Soft Skills” in the following way. We think they nailed it!

“A soft skill is a sociological term relating to a person’s “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence Quotient). Soft skills are personal attributes that enhance an individual’s interactions, job performance and career prospects. Unlike hard skills, which are about a person’s skill set and ability to perform a certain type of task or activity, soft skills relate to a person’s ability to interact effectively with coworkers and customers and are broadly applicable both in and outside the workplace. Soft Skills are behavioral competencies. Also known as interpersonal skills, or people skills, they include proficiencies such as communication skills, conflict resolution and negotiation, personal effectiveness, creative problem solving, strategic thinking, team building, influencing skills and selling skills, to name a few. A person’s soft skill EQ is an important part of their individual contribution to the success of an organization.

Screening or training for personal habits or traits such as dependability and conscientiousness can yield significant return on investment for an organization. For this reason, soft skills are increasingly sought out by employers in addition to standard qualifications. It has been suggested that in a number of professions soft skills may be more important over the long term than occupational skills.”

Will The Edge help me (or my son/daughter) create a resume, learn to interview and find a job?

As part of the Career Acceleration Program, we will review any resume submitted to us, free of charge, and provide feedback. We will spend some time on the subject of resume writing, interviewing and job searches as part of the program content, however we don’t plan to spend significant time directly addressing these areas. There are ample resources available for you to get help for these needs by professionals who specialize in job placement. We feel strongly that spending a significant amount of time on these subjects will lessen the overall value of the Career Acceleration Program in strengthening the soft skill set laid out in the Programs section of this site.

How long is the Career Acceleration Program?

The program consists of five (5) consecutive weekly sessions, each lasting two hours. Programs will be held throughout the year, aligning wherever possible with local college and university semester sessions to accommodate our participants who have not yet entered the workforce.

Where does the Career Acceleration Program take place?

Locations are chosen to provide the best accessibility for the range of participants registered.  Philadelphia courses are being held at The Hub, an environmentally-conscious, technology-enabled business meeting space located within the Cira Center, adjacent to Amtrak’s 30th Street Station. The address is 2929 Arch Street, Mezzanine Level, Philadelphia, PA.

Suburban locations include the Villanova Conference Center, 601 County Line Road, Radnor, PA and the University of Delaware.

The Edge will be expanding over time into other locations, markets and disciplines. We would love to hear from you if you are in an area where we are not currently hosting the Career Acceleration Program. How do you measure participation in the program?

A lot of thought has been given by our team regarding how to measure participation. We considered attendance records, quizzes and other methods of encouraging participation, but we didn’t feel that doing these types of things would be supportive of our mission, which includes developing responsibility, self-awareness and career-mindedness in our participants.

If you choose not to attend or participate in a session, it will be to your own detriment based on your own decision-making process, just as it will in your career. We do intend to provide each participant with a Certificate of Program Completion. This will serve as a reminder to apply your learning on a regular basis.

How did you develop your pricing for the Career Acceleration program?

As noted throughout the website, we aligned our pricing based on other “people skills” oriented programs in the market, such as programs offered by Dale Carnegie, The American Management Association and Learning Tree International.  We feel that the value of the program is significantly greater than any of our competition, in that it provides an important awareness of the real world corporate environment. It provides lifelong career advice that can lead you to new heights. You will note that pricing is commensurate with this thinking, and will provide investment return far beyond the cost.

Are there payment plans available?

Our standard payment process includes an up-front deposit of $50 at sign-up, with the remainder due one week prior to the start of the program. We follow this approach to ensure that you are clear of any remaining payments prior to the start of the program, and that all participants have paid by the start date. Payments will be accepted via credit card or check, which also provides options for you to spread out your payments via your bank.

How do I register?

Is the program offered online?

Not yet but we are working on creating a video series for the Career Acceleration program!  Be sure to subscribe here to be notified when it’s available.

Who are the instructors?

Matt Miades, the owner of the The Edge, is currently the instructor. You can find out more about his background on our “About” page.  Matt has a strong list of both potential guest speakers and additional CAP instructors for future sessions of the CAP Program.

Can I get career or executive coaching through The Edge?

Yes. Currently Matt Miades provides both career coaching for young professionals and executive coaching for more experienced leadership.  Please check the website, in the Programs section for more information.

What is expected of participants?

We expect that you will be on time, attentive and involved. We expect you to be respectful of the teaching environment, and not bring other work to do while in the room. Career acceleration is about improving your opportunity for success by dramatically increasing your awareness. We hope you will realize that taking each session seriously, and really sinking your teeth into the material, is what will provide you the highest return for this important investment in yourself.

What makes the Career Acceleration Program different from other soft skill training methods?

Reading books is helpful, but books can’t provide the specific focus and inspiration that comes from face-to-face interaction or the ability to answer your individual questions. Websites are also great resources, but provide generic information that’s not tailored to your particular work environment.  In addition, you often don’t know much about the people writing this type of content.

The Career Acceleration Program was designed by an accomplished executive who made mistakes, learned from them and turned those moments into opportunities that led to a career filled with enormous success.

The instructors are executives who have coached others from the ground up. They have recruited, developed and promoted people for many years, and understand what it takes to get the most out of an individual while giving back at the same time.

In addition, the CAP program provides:

  • A free, expert review of your resume
  • A 45 minute coaching session via telephone with your instructor
  • Entry into a social network of future leaders
  • Lifelong membership in The Edge community, including access to networking events, Edge resources and discounts on future events

Is there homework between sessions?

We won’t have any “homework” in the traditional sense. Instructors have the flexibility to share recommended reading, websites, videos or other materials that they think will enhance your learning experience. There are not grades, so it will always be up to you whether to do work in between sessions. In the end, self-development is a key theme of this program. If we’re doing our job, you’ll want to revisit the materials between sessions to enhance your absorption, and you’ll recognize that “homework” is really another word for self-development, a key factor in career success.

What happens if I miss a session?

We understand there will be times when you need to miss a session, although we hope this will be very limited. In the event a particular session is missed, we would first encourage you to have a colleague take notes for you and provide you with a verbal debrief. If space is available, we will allow you to attend the session in a future program to benefit from the executive-led learning.

What do I need to do to prepare for the program?

Nothing at all!  The program is self-contained and requires nothing more than the undivided attention, interest and passion of the instructors and participants.

What do you mean by People Strategy?

A People Strategy is your approach to handling your workforce in a way that supports your organizational objectives. Many companies do not take the time to formulate a cohesive People Strategy, and their approach ends up misunderstood, ill-conceived or stale.

A well designed People Strategy drives the investment in your workforce, from the newest college hire to the most experienced executive. It drives the behaviors in your workplace that support the hiring, growth, development, mentoring and retention of your people. The strategy should have both formal and informal components, and it requires the active input and support of senior leadership on an ongoing basis. An effective People Strategy is dynamic, leaving room for individuals to offer ideas and be heard, it allows employees to be rewarded for their contributions in diverse ways and to makes them feel like a key part of something much bigger than themselves.

What is the Career Acceleration Program cancellation policy?

 If you simply want to reschedule for a different session, please email us at Inquiries@SharpenYourPotential.com and let us know which session you’d like to attend instead. We will keep your deposit and process your attendance normally from there.  If you need to cancel completely before the final payment due date three weeks in advance of the program, you can email us at Inquiries@SharpenYourPotential.com to let us know and you will forfeit your $50 deposit.  

 
After the due date of the final payment one week prior to the program, your cancellation will result in a $250 charge, due to the proximity to the delivery date and the inability for us to find a replacement participant.  Simply email us at Inquiries@SharpenYourPotential.com to let us know that you wish to cancel and the remainder of your fee will be refunded to you.  In some severe situations we recognize that events can happen that are beyond your control, and we will be happy to have a conversation with you about potential options in those situations.
